The Rosicrucians originally published this treatise written by the author while incarcerated in the Tower of London during the years 1509-1510.
This edition is an omnibus edition containing 3 books (manuscripts). First is a scan of the report of the trial o Katherine Nairn, from 1765, written in 18th century English. Next is the story of the trial in modern English by Roughead written in 1913. Last are remarks on the trial of William Sutton, on trial for the murder of a prostitute. TGS is proud to present a scanned copy of a book that is over 240 years old.
A book with such an odd title as "The Twisted Scriptures" may need an explanation, for no faithful Christian, including the author of this book, believes that "Twisted" is one of the characteristics of the holy Scriptures. The author is referring to the way some people treat the Bible. They do not use it as much as they abuse it.
THESE are troubled times. As the echoes of the war die away the sound of a new conflict rises on our ears. All the world is filled with industrial unrest. Strike follows upon strike. A world that has known five years of fighting has lost its taste for the honest drudgery of work. Cincinnatus will not back to his plow, or, at the best, stands sullenly between his plow-handles arguing for a higher wage.
It always befuddles my mind how modern Christians can take a half verse out of the Bible, regarding induced miscarriages and create an entire anti-abortion movement from it. YET, with the hundreds of references and condemnations of usury - money changing in the Bible, Christians ignore and disobey, with intent, all the scriptures regarding usury and the money changers.
Variously a parish helper to the London poor and a successful New Zealand sheep farmer, Samuel Butler did not treasure the attitudes of his time (the second half of the 19th century). His books were iconoclastic in their attitudes towards Victorian ideals and The Way of All Flesh is foremost among them. It is appropriate, then, that it was published after his death and Queen Victoria's, in 1903.
TRUTH is eternal, exhaustless, unfathomable. Its Divine Fount is far beyond human discovery, however rich the intellect which aspires towards its inaccessible heights.
A unique collection of precepts for women by a woman who live through the age of enlightenment that made pathways into equal woman's rights. Though the author doesn't claim to be a part of the the movement, her insights are spiritually enlightening to the woman who chooses not to accept the role and yoke placed on her by a man-ruled society.
The claiming for women equality with men, not only in mental capacity, but in civil and ecclesiastical rights, may shock the preconceived opinions of many persons, and will probably subject the individual advancing such views to the charge of fanaticism and false teaching; yet we conceive the claim to be consistent with reason, justice, and the Word of God
The Christ had preached a universal doctrine, a new revelation of the Good God, the Father over all. They who tried to graft this on to Judaism, the imperfect creed of one small nation, were in grievous error, and had totally misunderstood the teaching of the Christ. The Christ was not the Messiah promised to the Jews. That Messiah was to be an earthly king, was intended for the Jews alone, and had not yet come.
