An excellent book showing that the Southern States stood up for the American constitution, republican form of government, and the American dream, while the Northern states destroyed what little was left of 'a government of the people'.

Our founders intended the judicial branch of government to be "the weakest of the three departments of power," and they tried to make that clear in the Constitution (see Alexander Hamilton's Federalist Number 78). However, our founders underestimated the gall, deviousness and lust-for-power of future judges. Throughout our history, America's judiciary has relentlessly expanded its power at the expense of elected bodies accountable to "We The People."

THE Law of Nations, though so noble and important a subject, has not, hitherto, been treated of with all the care it deserves. The greater part of mankind have, therefore, only a vague, a very incomplete, and often even a false notion of it. The generality of writers, and even celebrated authors, almost exclusively confine the name of "Law of Nations" to certain maxims and treatises recognised among nations, and which the mutual consent of the parties has rendered obligatory on them.

Understand the laws which are 'supposedly' governing the interaction between nations.

This was written to appreciate what laws have been in existence for a long time and therefore have proven their success in maintaining a stable society. Its purpose is also to see the historical context in which our legal doctrines developed. It includes the inception of the common law system, which was praised because it made law which was not handed down by an absolutist king; the origin of the jury system; the meaning of the Magna Carta provisions in their historical context; and the emergence of attorneys.
