Though the resemblance of early Sumerian tradition to that of the Hebrews is striking, it furnishes a still closer parallel to the summaries preserved from the history of Berossus. The huge figures incorporated in the latter's chronological scheme are no longer to be treated as a product of Neo-Babylonian speculation; they reappear in their original surroundings in another of these early documents, the Sumerian Dynastic List.
This is Budge's great work in defining how the gods of Egypt were related to each other and their functions. Understanding these ancient Egyptian gods brings you a greater understanding of the source of polytheism of Rome, Greece, and even the multi-headed god of Christianity, which is polytheism in a modified form. Another mystery in the Egyptian beliefs was their origin of monotheism which can be directly linked to the monotheism of Judaism and Islam.
Besides the pseudepigrapha there are other Jewish sources in Christian garb. In the rich literature of the Church Fathers many a Jewish legend lies embalmed which one would seek in vain in Jewish books. It was therefore my special concern to use the writings of the Fathers to the utmost.
The luxuriant abundance of the material to be presented made it impossible to give a verbal rendition of each legend. This would have required more than three times the space at my disposal.
My efforts have been directed to bringing together as full as possible a collection of Jewish legends that deal with Biblical personages and events. The sources of those legends and explanations of some of them will be given
When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a People of strange language, Jacob was His sanctuary and Israel His dominion. Jewish legend attempts to describe how God's sanctuary, the religion of Israel and His dominion, the beginnings of Israel as a nation, arose in the time between the Exodus from Egypt and the entrance into the Holy Land. Moses is regarded not only as the greatest religious guide of Israel, but also as its first national leader; he is "the wisest of the wise, the father of the prophets," as well as "king in Jeshiurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel gathered together.
The early history of the first Jewish conqueror in some respects is like the early history of the first Jewish legislator. Moses was rescued from a watery grave, and raised at the court of Egypt. Joshua, in infancy, was swallowed by a whale, and, wonderful to relate, did not perish. At a distant point of the sea-coast the monster spewed him forth unharmed. He was found by compassionate passers-by, and grew up ignorant of his descent.
The story of a giant race in South America has been dismissed as myth and hoax by 'the' establishment historians, but these accounts of actual visits and experiences cannot be discounted so easily.
The story of Zoroaster, the great Persian prophet and forerunner of Jesus who taught similarly.
One of the few books written that comprehensively delves into the life of Merlin the Magician, as he is commonly known. Merlin also delivered prophecies, some already fulfilled, others yet to come.
The inner life of the most remarkable woman that ever lived is here presented to American readers for the first time. Ninon, or Mademoiselle de l'Enclos, as she was known, was the most beautiful woman of the seventeenth century. For seventy years she held undisputed sway over the hearts of the most distinguished men of France; queens, princes, noblemen, renowned warriors, statesmen, writers, and scientists bowing before her shrine and doing her homage, even Louis XIV, when she was eighty-five years of age, declaring that she was the marvel of his reign.
On April 23, 1912, the Lord Chancellor appointed a wreck commissioner under the merchant shipping acts, and on April 26 the home secretary nominated five assessors. On April 30 the board of trade requested that a formal investigation of the circumstances attending the loss of the steamship Titanic should be held, and the court accordingly commenced to sit on May 2. Since that date there have been 37 public sittings, at which 97 witnesses have been examined, while a large number of documents, charts, and plans have been produced.
This wonderful reprint investigates from an objective mind the strange customs and traditions of the religions of India. The author has experiences that cannot be explained away as fraud and tricksters, and he relates many of the con-artist's tricks in India. The book kept us at HiddenMysteries spellbound reading it from cover to cover.
Freedom of thought, and freedom of press was a landmark of the Roman Republic era... Many advances in the sciences and arts were accomplished due to this freedom. Unlike today's religious nonsense, Ovid's love stories were produced when the prevailing religion of the times supported such freedom of expression. Hail our god - Caesar?
No other person's life, biography, and death from the Dark Ages has been so recorded in such detail and under sworn testimony, witnessed by her friends and enemies. Her life stands as a testimony to the capability of women.
The New Toryism, is of primary importance just now, because it shows the contrast between the aims and methods of early Liberalism and those of modern Liberalism. In these days we hear a great deal about Liberalism, Liberal principles and policies, in the conduct of our public life. All sorts and conditions of men put themselves forward on the public stage as Liberals; they call those who oppose them Tories, and get credit with the public thereby. In the public mind, Liberalism is a term of hon our, while Toryism - especially "economic Toryism" - is a term of reproach.
